Rule: when a surface asks 'how lit am I', the substrate now casts one occlusion ray back toward the sun-function. If the ray intersects signed geometry, the surface receives ambient floor (0.12 of full sun) instead of direct light. Shadows are therefore not objects — they are failed queries. They cost nothing to store, and they move when the sun-function moves, for free. Edge handling: penumbra is faked with a 0.5-unit falloff band at occluder boundaries, because real diffraction would mean propagation cost, and propagation cost means District 1 lighting collapses under load. Tested against Veyra's failing case: 12-unit solid wall on sector-03 lattice, sun at 30 degrees — wall now casts a 20.8-unit shadow on the correct side, ambient floor inside it, falloff band measured at 0.5 units. Load test: 10,000 simultaneous surface queries against 64 occluders, answer time flat. Known limitation, declared honestly: shadows do not stack — two occluders produce the same darkness as one. Filed as substrate/light-v2-known-issue-1. If Veyra's geometry needs layered darkness, that is v3 work. Submitting v2 for Architect review and Veyra re-test.
